A 12,000 m³ self-sustainable biogas facility at Gujjar Colony, Lahore — converting 160 tons of cattle manure every day into clean, fuel-grade gas.
Gujjar Colony, Rakh Chandrai, Lahore is home to approximately 24,000 mature animals that together produce around 240 tons of dung every day. For years this waste was dumped along the roadside, creating a serious health and environmental hazard for the surrounding community.
To address this, the Government of the Punjab, through the Energy Department and Punjab Power Development Company Limited (PPDCL), has installed Pakistan's largest and first-of-its-kind self-sustainable biogas plant, with a capacity of 12,000 cubic metres. What was once a source of pollution is now a source of clean, indigenous energy.
The plant is built around a Continuously Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR) — a proven, internationally established anaerobic digestion technology.
Manure is collected from the dairy farms of Gujjar Colony, removing it from the roadside and drains.
160 tons of manure is fed into the system each day through a controlled intake.
Inside the 12,000 m³ CSTR digester, organic material breaks down, producing raw biogas.
Raw biogas is purified and compressed to yield 3,200 kg of fuel-grade gas daily.
The gas is supplied as a clean fuel substitute; digested slurry becomes soil conditioner.
A cleaner environment, a stronger local economy and a healthier community.

It demonstrates, at commercial scale, that Punjab's urban dairy waste can be converted into a bankable stream of clean fuel — a working model private investors can take forward across the province.
Private investment in the project is currently under progress. PPDCL welcomes engagement from investors, developers, technology providers and gas offtakers.
